Moving people without petrol

There’s a better way to cut traffic congestion and

make Melbourne a Greener city.

Our city is choking on cars and trucks.

Expanded, frequent, fast, clean and safe public transport can shift large numbers of people to where they want to go. It will cut congestion and make travelling easier for those who still need to use their cars. The shift has already started. All levels of Government need to get on board.

You only need to travel to a city where public transport works, to see the possibilities. They’re not all in Europe. Many are in America, and even Perth is moving this way.

Many of Melbourne’s local councils, from the inner city, to the suburbs and the outer fringes, are backing this vision. There is a better way.

There are five steps to moving people in and through Melbourne without petrol.

1. A new bike network

2. A fast rail link from Doncaster to the City along the Eastern Freeway

3. Rail links to Melbourne’s urban-fringe growth areas

4. Fast, frequent and well connected local transport systems across Melbourne

5. Make road freight more efficient and shift it to rail

Below is step 1. The others will be the subjects of further posts.

1. A new bike network

8% of commuters to the CBD currently arrive by bike. With the right bike network, we can make it 30%.

The Greens will build Bicycle Victoria’s proposed new series of bicycle routes, a crucial step towards alleviating congestion in Melbourne.
