The Melbourne City Greens

The Melbourne City Greens is the inner-city branch of the Australian Greens (Victoria), and covers the same area as Melbourne City Council, taking in the city and the suburbs of Carlton, Docklands, East Melbourne, Kensington, North Melbourne, Parkville, Southbank and West Melbourne, as well as parts of Carlton North, Port Melbourne and South Yarra; an area home to over 70,000 people.

On Melbourne City Council, we have one elected Green, Cr Fraser Brindley, elected in 2004. We were the runner-up in the contest for Lord Mayor of Melbourne in that year, and we’re running a determined campaign to increase our council representation in 2008.

At the state level, the Greens achieved a Two Party Preferred vote with candidate Dr Richard DiNatale of 48% to Education Minister Bronwyn Pike’s 52% in the seat of Melbourne in 2006 and in 2002, and elected Greg Barber MLC to the Legislative Assembly region of Northern Metropolitan.

At the federal level, the Greens achieved a Two Party Preferred vote with candidate Adam Bandt of 45.3% to Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner’s 54.7% in the seat of Melbourne in 2007, and came very close to electing Dr Richard DiNatale to the Senate. This makes Melbourne a Labor-Green marginal seat at both state and federal levels.

The Melbourne City Greens is currently co-convened by Rohan Leppert and Alister Air.
