The Greens are excited and proud to publicly announce their Deputy Lord Mayor candidate for November’s elections.

Introducing Melbourne’s next Deputy Lord Mayor… Councillor Kathleen Maltzahn.

Kathleen is a current City of Yarra councillor (since 2004) and chair of the Finances and Human Services, Disability Advisory and Bicycle Advisory Committees. She is the executive director of Women’s Health in the North.

Kathleen is a founding Director of Project Respect, where she spearheaded the successful national campaign to put trafficking in women for prostitution on the national agenda. She was awarded the inaugural (2005) Dame Phyllis Frost Award from the National Council of Women of Victoria in recognition of her work on trafficking. Her book, Trafficked (UNSW Press) will be published in July 2008.

Kathleen also worked as Interim Director of the East Timor Human Rights Centre, and is a Patron of the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition.

Kathleen has a passion for community involvement in the democratic process which has been fostered over many years working in the community sector: ‘a real people’s mayor should be ready to listen hard and act when ordinary people talk - a Greens mayor and deputy mayor would restore Town Hall’s relationship with residents, and protect the riches its people treasure’.

Kathleen currently lives in Fitzroy North and has lived in the inner North and Elwood since 1995, when she returned from living in the Phillipines for 5 years.
